Runaway leaders, high flyers, League Leaders Trophy winners and Challenge Cup Finalists – St Helens have been lauded for their performances throughout the season as they reach Wembley after an 11-year hiatus.

Entering the competition in round 6, the twelve-time winners were drawn away to the Huddersfield Giants. A bruising first half saw them go into the sheds with a slender two-point advantage at half-time.

After trading blow-for-blow in the second half, Justin Holbrook’s side showed the mettle needed to see out the game by holding off the Giants during the final 20 minutes.

The win secured them a home draw in the quarter finals against an injury-impacted Wakefield side. Saints pounced on a host of errors to put themselves into a 26-6 lead at half-time.

The first try of the second half went to Wakefield which, for a short period, reduced the deficit to 16 points but the Merseyside team turned the screw with a further four tries to put themselves firmly into the hat for the semi-final draw.

Having been drawn against part-time Championship side Halifax in the semi-final, it’s fair to say to few people would call St Helens’ progression to the final a shock. However, in the early stages, Holbrook’s men struggled to break down a resilient side with the half-time score being just 8-2 in Saints’ favour.

Halifax continued to make the league leaders work hard throughout the second half but were unable to stop the inevitable as the game ended 26-2.
